From Twila Brase at Citizens Council on Health Care:
At 11:09 p.m. EST [Friday], the U.S. House voted to impose socialized medicine on all Americans. Arms were twisted and promises were made that we may never know about. This outcome in the House was unfortunate, but not unexpected. (photos below) Congressman John Shadegg (R-AZ) made the most courageous and strategic decision of the night. Despite knowing that National Right to Life would ding him for his "present" vote on the Stupak pro-life amendment (call it a No vote) , he did not budge. His plan was to lead his colleagues in a courageous and strategic attempt to derail the bill. Without the amendment, the bill would likely not have passed tonight. Unfortunately, not one colleague followed. Shadegg brings baby - video
When the vote on final passage of H.R. 3962 hit 218, the number needed to pass, the Democrats in the chamber and others began to clap and cheer. The final vote was 220 - 215, with one lone Republican, Joseph Cao (R-LA), voting for the bill. One wonders what the Democrats gave him to get this veneer of "bipartisan" passage? President Obama makes a statement. Afterwards, at the Democrat press conference, the Democrats oohed and aahed over the "leadership" of Nancy Pelosi. One said she'll be one of the best speakers in the history of Congress. This is no time to give up. That would be their hope. It should not be yours. Passage in the U.S. Senate will be more difficult for reformers and socialists. Prepare to pour the pressure on. Do not go home, give up, or go away! Twila Brase President, CCHC 651-646-8935
