Senator McCain has a new ad out that is in the right direction—advocating drilling in and around the US. But is it effective?
I know it's just a 30 second spot and on the whole it's not bad. But I think a whole lot better solution would be to dispense with the quick change ending from grungy ancient style pump and streaked heat devil background with black noise audio, into sky blue optimism with inspra-tone soundtrack. Instead, here's your set up...
Get McCain pulling up in an mid sized vehicle, Town car, SUV, pick up, mini van, doesn't really matter, but not a prius—wrong message—not everyone can go out and trade up for a new ultra low mileage vehicle today. While he's driving in have cutaways of $4.00 price sign for unleaded, a shot of his face behind the wheel, and background narration in his voice stating the problem.
Have McCain get out of the car and start pumping gas and talk—straight talk if you will—right into the camera, no fancy effects, and give the 1, 2, 3 of we need to drill here, now, that it will effect the world market overnight and that Pelosi, Reid, Omaba, et al are opposing it.
He gets 3 bangs for his buck, He decimates not only his opponent, Omaba, he kneecaps congress and the senate at once putting the blame where it belongs. But this is not just a finger pointing exercise, He is offering a solution, frankly an blatantly obvious one. But a solution. And talk about coattails, there is not a single more important issue on which to dominate this cycle. Finally, he reinforces his regular guy persona by driving up, pumping his own gas and talking solutions. It’s a gimmick, yes, but a believable one. Can anyone imagine the same ad by Obama? I’m giggling just thinking about it.
Final message: Close up of the final price on the pump, say $65.00, then close camera in to McCain: “It's YOUR natural resource, and only YOU with YOUR vote can make it happen. Do you want to drop prices overnight? November 4th, you can make it happen. Cue McCain Logo.
